
CNC Laser Cutting vs. 5-Axis CNC Carving: Which Is Right for Your Project?
Two of our most-used production methods solve very different problems. Here's when each one is the right tool for the job.
Most architectural scale models are built from a combination of production techniques, not just one. Two of the most frequently used — CNC laser cutting and 5-axis CNC carving — solve fundamentally different geometry problems, and knowing which applies where helps set expectations on timeline and finish.
CNC laser cutting: flat, precise, fast
Laser cutting works on flat sheet material — acrylic, MDF, card, thin plywood — and excels at anything built from repeated flat layers: facade panels, floor plates, window mullions, and landscape contour layers. It's the workhorse for rectilinear buildings, townships, and any project where speed and dimensional accuracy across many repeated parts matter more than sculptural form.
5-axis CNC carving: curves and compound geometry
Curved facades, torus and dome forms, and sculptural massing don't reduce cleanly to flat layers. 5-axis carving machines a solid block from multiple angles simultaneously, letting it hold true compound curvature that laser-cut layers can only approximate. It's slower and more material-intensive than laser cutting, but it's the difference between a curved building looking genuinely curved versus visibly stepped.
In practice, most projects use both
A high-rise tower with a flat glass facade might be almost entirely laser-cut. The same tower with a sculpted podium or a curved crown will usually have that specific element carved and the rest laser-cut — using each method where it's actually the better tool, rather than forcing one technique across an entire build.
If your project has a mix of flat facades and sculptural elements, it's worth flagging the specific features you want to prioritise for detail early — that's usually what determines whether a project leans more toward one production method or the other.
